Downtown Baton Rouge prepares for a major celebration as the nation approaches its 250th Independence Day anniversary. The Downtown Development District says this year’s riverfront event will bring music, activities, and a large fireworks show.
Whitney Hoffman Sayal says the city continues to build momentum with ongoing downtown improvements. In addition, officials are working to make the riverfront more accessible and active for residents and visitors.
Riverfront Projects Improve Walkability and Access
The Downtown Development District continues to advance Plan Baton Rouge 3. As part of that plan, crews are building new multi-use paths. These paths connect residential areas to the levee trail system.
As a result, residents can now walk directly from home to the riverfront. Previously, many people had to drive to access the levee trails.
In addition, crews will soon begin streetscape upgrades on 3rd Street. These improvements include new “parklets.” These small spaces add outdoor seating and encourage street activity.
Tree Planting Efforts Expand Downtown Green Space
Downtown leaders also completed a major tree planting project. They planted more than 100 trees in partnership with Baton Rouge Green. This effort improves shade and enhances the urban environment.
Moreover, officials plan about 40 additional projects. They will coordinate these efforts with local partners. As a result, downtown development will continue to grow over the coming months.
Fourth of July Event Brings Music and Fireworks
This year’s Fourth of July celebration runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the riverfront. The event features live music throughout the day.
For example, the lineup includes the Marine Corps Band, Rockin’ Dopsie, Amanda Shaw, Wayne Toups, and John Schneider. In addition, visitors can enjoy food vendors and downtown businesses.
Finally, the night ends with a large fireworks display over the Mississippi River. The show will be visible from much of downtown. Therefore, organizers encourage early arrival for the best experience.
