Walt Leger Highlights New Orleans Tourism Growth and IPW 2027

Amtrak Mardi Gras Train Surpasses Expectations

Walt Leger of New Orleans & Company joined Brian Haldane on Mornings with Brian Haldane to discuss tourism, transportation and major events shaping New Orleans and Louisiana.

Leger highlighted the one-year anniversary of the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service, which has dramatically exceeded first-year expectations. The service originally projected about 75,000 riders but is on track to surpass 150,000.

Leger said the strong ridership shows the demand for better connections across the Gulf Coast. He sees additional potential for business travelers, particularly with expanded service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and better connections to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

New Orleans Offers Incentives for Visitors

Leger also discussed several opportunities for visitors to experience New Orleans. Through September 30, travelers who book two consecutive hotel nights can receive a $100 virtual Visa gift card through a New Orleans & Company promotion.

Visitors can also take advantage of special culinary offerings and Museum Month. Participating restaurants are offering special menus, while Museum Month allows visitors with a membership to one participating museum to access others during August.

Fall Events Set the Stage for a Strong Quarter

As the fall season approaches, New Orleans will welcome festivals, concerts, conventions and other major events. Leger said the city has built a strong fourth-quarter calendar following a record-breaking period surrounding the Super Bowl.

IPW 2027 Could Deliver Major Economic Impact

Looking ahead, Leger discussed New Orleans hosting IPW 2027, one of the largest international travel events in the United States. More than 5,000 international travel buyers, industry professionals and media members are expected to attend.

Leger called the event the “Super Bowl of international travel” and said hosting it will give New Orleans and Louisiana a chance to showcase the state to global visitors. He expects international travelers to generate significant spending and create tourism momentum well beyond 2027.
