Flag Football Brings New Opportunities for Local Families
BREC is expanding recreational opportunities across East Baton Rouge Parish with a new flag football league, stronger public safety partnerships and a renewed focus on park maintenance.
During an appearance on Mornings with Brian Haldane, BREC leadership discussed plans to bring affordable recreational sports back to more families. The new flag football program aims to give children more opportunities to participate without the high costs often associated with competitive travel sports.
Officials said BREC will partner with leagues while providing well-maintained parks, fields and facilities. Registration is expected to open in September, with a one-day clinic planned for December 5. The season will run from January 13 through early March.
BREC Strengthens Park Safety and Accountability
BREC also highlighted renewed partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the parish. The goal is to create safer, more active parks where families feel comfortable spending time.
Leadership said BREC will focus on clear expectations, stronger accountability and better maintenance. The agency plans to reorganize park operations and place more staff at its community parks. Rapid-response teams will also address maintenance issues that require immediate attention.
City-Brooks Park Plan Moves Forward
The preferred master plan for City-Brooks Park will go before the public September 17. Proposed improvements include upgrades to the pool and pool house, a new recreation center, improved athletic fields and a 400-meter track.
The plan also emphasizes better connectivity throughout the park, including safer pedestrian connections and an expanded promenade system. Officials expect public input to help shape the project’s priorities.
Farr Park Emerges as a Baton Rouge Hidden Gem
Farr Park Equestrian Center is also preparing for growth. Facility upgrades include a new sound system and renovated horse stalls, allowing the center to pursue larger, multi-day events.
The park also offers 62 RV spaces near LSU, along with horse lessons, trail rides, birthday parties and equestrian events.
BREC leadership described Farr Park—and the broader BREC system—as a potential driver of community and economic development across Baton Rouge.
