June is Men’s Health Month, and doctors are encouraging men to make their health a priority. During a recent Medical Monday segment, Dr. Curtis Chastain of Our Lady of the Lake stressed the importance of preventive care and routine screenings.
Many men focus on work, family, and daily responsibilities. As a result, they often ignore their own health. Dr. Chastain said serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure usually develop over time. Regular checkups can catch these problems before they cause lasting damage.
Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Some symptoms deserve immediate attention. Chest pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, and wounds that refuse to heal can signal serious health issues. Persistent fatigue can also be a warning sign. Men often dismiss tiredness as part of a busy lifestyle, but sudden changes in energy levels should not be ignored.
Sleep Matters More Than You Think
Dr. Chastain called sleep one of the most overlooked aspects of health. Poor sleep can increase stress and contribute to long-term health problems. He encouraged men to examine habits that may disrupt sleep, including late-night screen time, caffeine, sugar, and heavy meals before bed.
Three Screenings Every Man Should Know
Dr. Chastain highlighted three important preventive screenings. First, a coronary calcium score can help detect heart disease early. Second, a colonoscopy can find and remove precancerous growths before they become dangerous. Third, men over 40 should discuss prostate cancer screening, including a PSA test and prostate exam, with their doctor.
Building a relationship with a primary care provider is one of the best investments a man can make. Preventive care helps identify problems early, improves treatment outcomes, and supports a healthier future.
