BREC leaders are asking voters to renew a 3.96-mill property tax on June 27. Officials stressed that the proposal is a renewal, not a new tax. If approved, the millage will continue funding park maintenance, daily operations, and recreational programs across East Baton Rouge Parish.
The renewal covers services residents use every day. Those services include mowing grass, cleaning restrooms, repairing vandalism, maintaining facilities, and offering programs for families. BREC officials explained that this funding differs from the Imagine Your Parks 3 initiative, which focuses on capital improvements and future projects.
BREC Highlights Progress During the Past Year
Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons pointed to several accomplishments over the past year. BREC completed its audits, improved park security, launched a rapid-response ticket system, and addressed operational challenges throughout the organization. Simmons said these efforts show the agency’s commitment to accountability and better service.
Interim Chief Human Resources Officer Johanna Landreneau also outlined workforce improvements. BREC modernized parts of its hiring process, strengthened leadership positions, and expanded employee training opportunities. The agency plans to launch BREC University this fall. The program will offer training in leadership, technology, procurement, and other workplace skills. Employees can earn certifications through the program.
Park Projects Continue Across the Parish
BREC recently completed playground upgrades at Lovett Road Park, Ben Burge Park, Parkview Park, and Hamilton Park. Officials noted that modern playground projects often cost more than $100,000 because of safety standards, accessibility requirements, and specialized surfaces.
The agency is also gathering public feedback on future improvements at City-Brooks Community Park and Perkins Road Community Park. Officials said community input will help determine project priorities and future phases. Meanwhile, BREC announced that Heritage Trails Parkway will be renamed Melvin Kip Holden Parkway in honor of the former Baton Rouge mayor.
Voters will decide the fate of the 10-year millage renewal during the June 27 election.
