BREC Superintendent Search Advances as Teen Volunteer Program and Park Funding Take Center Stage

The BREC superintendent search moves into a key phase this week. Three candidates will visit Baton Rouge for interviews, tours, and meetings with staff and leadership. The process includes internal town halls, small group sessions, and final interviews with commissioners.

Leaders say the goal is clear. They want someone with strong business and organizational skills. Parks experience helps, but it is not required. The focus stays on leadership, communication, and the ability to manage a large system. Officials also plan a transition period of a few months to keep operations stable.

Teen Volunteer Program Opens for Summer

At the same time, BREC is pushing its Counselor-in-Training program. It targets teens ages 14 to 17. Participants volunteer at summer camps and build leadership skills.

Applicants need:

  • A teacher’s recommendation
  • A recent report card
  • A commitment to help during the summer

The program is free. Teens can also earn service hours. Organizers want reliable, engaged students who can serve as role models for younger kids.

Tax Renewal Heads to Voters

BREC will also appear on the June 27 ballot. The proposal is a 3.96 mill renewal for 10 years. It funds park maintenance and daily operations. Officials stress this is not a new tax. It keeps current services running.

Leaders say the system faces pressure. Too many parks and limited funding stretch resources thin. The renewal helps maintain existing spaces and improve conditions across the system.

New Safety Facility and Faster Response

BREC also opened a new “Safety Place” at Cedar Ridge Park. The space teaches kids about real-world safety through hands-on stations.

Meanwhile, the rapid response system shows strong results. Officials report a high success rate and faster replies to public concerns. Residents can submit issues online and receive updates quickly.

BREC plans to release more updates as the superintendent search continues and summer programs ramp up.
