BREC Upgrades Parks, Expands Safety Measures, and Seeks Lifeguards Ahead of Summer

The East Baton Rouge Parish park system is pushing forward with major upgrades, safety improvements, and staffing efforts as summer approaches.

BREC officials say one of the most urgent needs right now is hiring lifeguards for Howell Park. The deep-water pool requires certified staff, and the agency is working to fill at least 10 positions to keep the pool fully open. Officials noted they will train and certify candidates, with competitive pay offered for both part-time and full-time roles.

At the same time, BREC is investing in safety. A new Security Operations Center will monitor up to 1,400 cameras across the parish. Staff will use real-time surveillance and “talk-down” technology to address issues as they happen. This shift moves the system from a reactive approach to a proactive one, with closer coordination with local law enforcement.

Park improvements are also underway across the parish. Crews are replacing about 10 playgrounds, with each project costing between $50,000 and $100,000 for equipment, plus additional costs for safer surfacing. Recent upgrades include new asphalt and striping at Lovett Park and road improvements at Howell Park.

New signage is rolling out parish-wide, designed to create a consistent and recognizable BREC brand. Meanwhile, several parks, including Pride Park and Alston Park, will soon host ribbon-cutting events after receiving new playgrounds, pavilions, and community features.

BREC is also expanding connectivity. The Freedom Heritage Trail now links key areas from Memorial Stadium to Scotlandville, supporting both bike and pedestrian access.

Looking ahead, officials are working to revive recreational sports leagues. The goal is to bring back affordable, community-based play and increase park use across the parish.
