State Representative Mike Bayham joins the show to discuss his bill to formally establish the Fugitive Apprehension Unit (FAU) under the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office. Although the unit has operated since 2008, the bill codifies it into law, ensuring its permanence regardless of future leadership. Bayham emphasized that the FAU has played a critical role in recent manhunts, including the apprehension of escapee Gary Price, and supports law enforcement agencies lacking resources.
The legislation provides the FAU with a clear legal framework, including responsibilities such as coordinating with state, federal, and local agencies, apprehending fugitives, executing arrest warrants, and prioritizing violent felony cases. Bayham clarified that while the unit works in conjunction with other agencies, it also helps bridge jurisdictional gaps when fugitives cross parish or state lines.
He noted that the bill is not facing significant opposition and is gaining support due to public safety concerns, especially following high-profile escapes in Orleans Parish. Bayham also highlighted broader legislative progress this session, particularly in insurance reform, aiming to attract more competition and lower rates. As the session nears its end, finalizing the FAU bill remains one of his top priorities, alongside preparing constitutional amendments for the 2026 election.
