St. George Firefighters Host Jambalaya Fundraiser to Support Bryan Coppola’s Cancer Fight

A local fire department is stepping up for one of its own.

The St. George Fire Department is hosting a jambalaya fundraiser to support firefighter Bryan Coppola, who is battling cancer. The event runs from 11 a.m. until sold out at the department’s headquarters on Airline Highway.

Organizers say the goal is simple. Help Bryan and his family while raising awareness about a growing issue among firefighters.

Bryan Coppola, the son of Crime Stoppers’ Lt. Don Coppola, has been with the department for only a few years. Because of that, he does not qualify for certain protections under Louisiana’s presumptive cancer law, which requires at least 10 years of service.

That gap highlights a bigger concern.

Firefighters face higher cancer risks due to repeated exposure to smoke, chemicals, and stress on the job. Union leaders say early detection and expanded support systems are critical.

The fundraiser offers $12 jambalaya plates, with all proceeds going toward Bryan’s medical and family expenses. Community members can also donate through online platforms tied to the St. George Firefighters Union and other fundraising efforts.

Support has already gained momentum.

Organizers report more than $21,000 raised so far, with a goal of $33,000. Multiple agencies, including Baton Rouge firefighters and local law enforcement, have joined the effort.

Leaders say the response shows how tight-knit the first responder community is.

They are not letting Bryan fight alone.

The message is clear. This is more than a meal. It is a chance for the community to rally behind a young firefighter and support a broader fight against cancer in the profession.
