Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week Highlights Legal Reform
During Lawsuit Abuse Awareness Week, State Representative Emily Chenevert and Lana Venable joined Brian Haldane on Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss Louisiana’s ongoing efforts to reform its civil justice system.
Chenevert emphasized that legal reform requires a sustained effort from lawmakers rather than a single legislative session. She pointed to recent changes, including modifications to comparative fault rules, while crediting colleagues who continue to introduce and support additional reforms.
Venable said the goal of Louisiana Lawsuit Abuse Watch is to educate residents and encourage greater public engagement with lawmakers and policy issues.
Legal Reform and Louisiana Insurance Costs
The discussion also focused on insurance costs for Louisiana businesses. Chenevert noted that companies with fleets of trucks and vans face significant operating expenses, including fuel and insurance.
Both guests argued that legal policy can influence the business environment by helping create clearer and more predictable rules. They connected those issues to Louisiana’s efforts to attract new investment and jobs.
Venable said a stable civil justice system can help Louisiana compete with other states for businesses and investment.
Looking Ahead to the Next Legislative Session
With another legislative session approaching and an election year on the horizon, the conversation turned to continued public awareness and legislative accountability.
Chenevert encouraged residents to pay attention to how reforms affect businesses, families and insurance costs. She also noted that competition within the insurance market could play a role as more companies consider Louisiana.
Venable said her organization plans to continue working with lawmakers, business groups and other organizations to educate the public about civil justice issues.
The conversation underscored a central theme: Louisiana’s legal and insurance environment remains an important policy issue as lawmakers prepare for the next session and businesses evaluate future investments in the state.
