How Louisiana Is Leading the Nation in AP Growth and Civics Excellence

Louisiana’s public education system is achieving historic academic gains, positioning the state as a national leader in student achievement. Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley recently shared key milestones demonstrating how a commitment to core academics is transforming outcomes for students statewide.

Surge in Advanced Placement Success

Since 2019, Louisiana has led the nation in Advanced Placement (AP) test score growth. Back in 2019, only 37% of high school AP exams taken earned college credit. Today, that number has jumped to 69%. Furthermore, Louisiana has closed its national achievement gap from 21 percentage points behind the average down to just 2 points. Superintendent Brumley attributes this success to stronger instruction, dedicated teachers, and expanded opportunities for college credit and workforce credentials.

Ranking First in Civics Education

Louisiana now ranks number one in the nation for its civics education program. The state stands out by requiring a full year of high school civics coursework along with a mandatory civics exam for graduation. Programs like “Celebrate Freedom Week” every September further connect K-12 students to foundational American history and foundational principles.

Addressing Attendance and Core Academics

While academic scores are rising, chronic absenteeism remains an area of focus. Louisiana reduced its chronic absenteeism rate from 24% in 2024 to 21% in 2026. Addressing this challenge requires deep collaboration between schools, families, and local community leaders. Louisiana also earned a top-10 spot—ranking seventh nationally—in Defending Education’s RISE ranking for educational integrity, affirming the state’s dedication to foundational reading, math, and career readiness.
