Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois joined Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss the state’s landmark SpaceX investment and what it could mean for jobs, infrastructure, and coastal restoration.
SpaceX Investment Marks Major Economic Milestone
Bourgeois described the SpaceX announcement as a transformational moment for Louisiana. The project pushed the state’s announced capital investments to roughly $260 billion, with another $210 billion in potential projects.
She said Louisiana must now focus on choosing projects strategically while making sure the state can support continued growth.
Jobs and Local Businesses
The SpaceX project could create thousands of permanent jobs, along with tens of thousands of construction positions and thousands of indirect jobs across the Acadiana region.
Bourgeois said SpaceX wants Louisiana workers and companies involved. The company has committed to using Source Louisiana to identify local contractors and vendors. She encouraged Louisiana businesses to register and verify their information so they can compete for opportunities.
The project will need engineers, welders, pipe fitters, technicians, and many other workers. Bourgeois said Louisiana already has many of the skills SpaceX needs because workers have built LNG facilities, ships, and energy infrastructure for decades.
Coastal Restoration Takes Center Stage
The project also includes a major coastal component. Louisiana Economic Development acquired 125,000 acres of former ExxonMobil property and sold the land to SpaceX for $100 million. Bourgeois said the state will transfer those funds to the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority for coastal restoration.
SpaceX plans to begin construction immediately, with a goal of launching rockets by 2029. Bourgeois said the facility could eventually support frequent launches and help transform Southwest Louisiana’s economy.
She emphasized that Louisiana must balance economic growth with environmental protection, regional planning, and long-term infrastructure needs.
