Baton Rouge Move 2050: Funding, Interstate Widening, and Transit Needs

The Capital Region Planning Commission (CRPC) is actively gathering public input on Move 2050, the 25-year long-range transportation plan for the five-parish Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Executive Director Jamie Setze recently joined Talk 107.3’s Brian Haldane to discuss the massive scale of regional infrastructure needs and where available funding falls short. With an estimated $8.2 billion needed to address regional traffic and safety, transportation officials must prioritize state investments into high-impact infrastructure projects.

Public feedback from initial meetings highlighted urgent concerns over regional transit access. Business organizations like the Baton Rouge Area Chamber and Louisiana Works report that a lack of vehicle access creates a significant barrier for residents attempting to access job training programs and key employment centers across the region. Addressable solutions include expanding transit options outside East Baton Rouge Parish and utilizing restructured workforce development programs under the Louisiana Workforce Commission to better connect local workers with employment.

Interstate widening remains another top priority for regional drivers and freight logistics. While work continues on Interstate 10 in downtown Baton Rouge, corridors along Interstate 12 through Livingston, Tangipahoa, and St. Tammany parishes require expanded capacity to ease severe bottlenecks. A long-standing state plan calls for expanding I-12 to three lanes in each direction continuously, yet funding delays have stalled progress for two decades, particularly in high-growth areas like Livingston Parish and the freight hub of Hammond.

Additionally, right-of-way acquisition presents a critical bottleneck for regional megaprojects, including the proposed new Mississippi River bridge. Long timelines and escalating land costs emphasize the need for streamlined acquisition processes at the state level to ensure projects move efficiently from planning to construction.
