The Sullivan Theater continues to grow as a cultural hub in Central, offering residents and visitors a place to experience live theater, music, history, and community arts.
During an interview with Central Mayor Wade Evans, Central Cultural Foundation President Dave Freneaux shared how the theater has evolved from a longtime community vision into a thriving nonprofit organization. Freneaux said he and his wife helped establish the Central Cultural Foundation 15 years ago to create opportunities for local artists and historians. After years of hosting small events, the organization launched Sullivan Theater in 2023. Today, the venue is entering its fourth season and produces nine shows each year.
Freneaux described the theater as a key part of Central’s quality of life. In addition to community theater productions, Sullivan Theater now serves as the home of the Red Dragon Listening Room, which hosts live folk, country, and bluegrass performances. The next concert is scheduled for July 10.
Youth Program Continues to Grow
The theater has also expanded its youth programming. The Sullivan Theater Youth Company recently attracted 86 young performers to audition for its upcoming production of Hadestown. Freneaux said the program gives students a professional-style theater experience through auditions, rehearsals, and live performances.
Community Impact Beyond the Stage
The organization logged nearly 7,000 volunteer hours last year. Volunteers help build sets, create costumes, paint scenery, run concessions, and support productions behind the scenes.
Mayor Evans noted that Sullivan Theater contributes to Central’s economy by attracting visitors who dine and shop locally before attending performances. Freneaux estimated that more than half of theater patrons come from outside Central, bringing additional revenue into the city.
Looking ahead, Sullivan Theater plans to increase its annual productions and continue expanding arts opportunities for residents of all ages. Information about upcoming shows, tickets, volunteering, and sponsorships is available at SullivanTheater.com.
