BREC leaders shared updates on park improvements, financial priorities, and future projects during a recent appearance on Talk 107.3’s “BREC Room.” Interim Superintendent Janet Simmons and Maurice Velasquez discussed the agency’s progress over the past year and encouraged residents to vote on the June 27 tax renewal.
Simmons stressed that the proposal is a renewal, not a new tax. The funding supports park maintenance and daily operations, including summer camps, aquatics programs, senior activities, and adaptive recreation services. She compared the maintenance to routine home maintenance that keeps facilities functioning and prevents larger problems later.
The leadership team also reflected on challenges they faced when stepping into interim roles. One of their priorities was addressing issues that delayed the opening of Liberty Lagoon and tackling major repairs at Farr Park. Since then, BREC has reorganized departments, improved communication between teams, and launched a rapid response system designed to improve customer service and public communication.
Velasquez said BREC has spent months organizing project information across departments. The agency is developing a public project tracking system that will help residents see priorities, timelines, and plans. Leaders believe greater transparency will improve public trust and help guide decision-making.
Another major topic was the future of City-Brooks Community Park. Nearly 300 residents attended a recent public meeting to review two concepts for the park’s master plan. One proposal features a large loop trail around the park, while the other includes pathways connecting key areas throughout the property. BREC officials said public feedback will continue to shape the plan.
Looking ahead, BREC is preparing for new leadership when incoming Superintendent Brooks Williams begins in August. Simmons said Williams brings extensive city planning experience and will help move the organization into its next phase of growth and development.
