A new vision for downtown Baton Rouge is taking shape through Plan Baton Rouge Phase 3. Leaders with the Baton Rouge Area Foundation shared new details about the long-term project during a recent interview focused on the future of the city’s riverfront and downtown growth.
The plan follows months of public meetings, surveys, and community feedback. Organizers said thousands of surveys helped shape more than 80 recommendations. Several major ideas rose to the top, especially projects tied to the Mississippi Riverfront.
One major proposal includes creating a sports and entertainment district near the Queen Casino. The concept could include hotels, parking, and tourism attractions designed to boost youth sports travel in Baton Rouge.
Another idea would transform part of the downtown riverfront into a pedestrian-friendly gathering space. Plans include cafes, small shops, green space, and areas for live music near River Road and Lafayette Street.
Family-friendly attractions also play a large role in the proposal. Leaders said surveys showed residents want more activities for children downtown. One proposal adds a playground and public park space near the Louisiana Art & Science Museum and USS Kidd area.
The discussion also highlighted challenges tied to railroad access, flood concerns, and coordination with state and federal agencies. Officials said many of the projects remain conceptual, but planning committees and development groups would help move ideas forward.
Outside of the riverfront, planners identified Downtown East as another major opportunity area. The goal is to add more housing options for working professionals and families while encouraging long-term development east of Interstate 110.
