BREC is thanking Baton Rouge voters after they overwhelmingly approved the park system’s millage renewal. The vote secures funding for parks, recreation programs, and facility maintenance across East Baton Rouge Parish.
Speaking on The BREC Room on Talk 107.3 FM, BREC Superintendent Janet Simmons said the result reflects growing public confidence in the organization.
Voters Support Continued Progress
Simmons said the renewed funding allows BREC to maintain parks, expand programs, and continue improving facilities. She believes residents noticed the progress made during the past year.
“We’re grateful for the support,” Simmons said. “Now it’s time to raise the standard.”
Assistant Superintendent Maurice Velasquez praised BREC employees for restoring public trust. He credited staff in finance, communications, information technology, human resources, and park operations for helping modernize the organization.
Park Projects Continue Across the Parish
BREC is now turning its attention to future improvements. One major focus is Baker, where leaders plan to upgrade athletic facilities and improve parks along Scenic Highway.
Officials also want to grow sports tourism. Better facilities could attract tournaments, visitors, and new business opportunities for the region.
Residents can also help shape the future of City-Brooks Community Park. BREC will host a public meeting on July 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Independence Park Theatre. Community members can review proposals and provide feedback.
Golf Continues to Grow
Director of Golf Mike Raby said golf participation remains strong. BREC recorded more than 204,000 rounds last year. That total nearly doubled compared to several years ago, even though the system now operates one fewer golf course.
Raby said BREC’s five courses offer options for beginners, families, and experienced golfers alike.
With voter support secured, BREC leaders say they will focus on improving parks, expanding recreation, and creating more opportunities for residents throughout East Baton Rouge Parish.
