Louisiana Organ Donor Bill Would Protect Public Employees

A Louisiana senator is pushing a bill that could help more people become living organ donors. Senate Bill 409 would protect public employees who choose to donate an organ while they recover. Supporters say the bill could remove a big roadblock for people who want to save a life.

Bill aims to support living donors

State Sen. Brock Myers said SB 409 would create protections for public workers who decide to become living organ donors. He said nearly 2,000 people in Louisiana are waiting for an organ right now. He believes stronger protections could encourage more donors to step up.

The bill focuses on public employees during this session. Myers said lawmakers removed private-sector tax incentives because this is not a fiscal session. He added that he wants to revisit that part next year.

Corey Ryder shares personal story

Corey Ryder joined Myers to explain why the bill matters. Ryder donated 65% of his liver to his father after his dad’s health worsened and a transplant became urgent. He said the procedure gave his father a second chance.

Ryder said doctors had him walking within 24 hours of surgery. He left the hospital less than a week later. After about six weeks, he returned to work and normal life. He said his liver has now fully regenerated.

Support grows at the Capitol

Myers said the bill has received strong support so far and should move smoothly through the Senate. Supporters hope it also raises awareness about living organ donation and shows others what is possible.

If passed, SB 409 could make it easier for more Louisiana workers to become lifesaving donors.
