Louisiana faces massive infrastructure demands as economic expansion accelerates across the state. Capital Region Planning Commission Executive Director Jamie Setze recently joined Talk 107.3 to outline “Move 2050,” a comprehensive 25-year multimodal transportation plan.
Addressing Preservation and Expanding Regional Mobility
The Move 2050 plan addresses critical infrastructure across East Baton Rouge, Ascension, Iberville, Livingston, and West Baton Rouge parishes. While major local programs like MOVE BR invested over $2 billion locally, state-level funding lags significantly. Consequently, Louisiana faces a backlog exceeding $14 billion. Preservation and maintenance of existing corridors will consume most transportation funds over the next quarter-century. However, regional leaders must simultaneously target bottleneck relief along heavily traveled routes like Interstate 10 and Interstate 12.
Balancing Industrial Growth with State Highway Upgrades
Rapid industrial development continually shifts regional transportation priorities. Major global investments, such as new manufacturing facilities and data centers, demand rapid highway modifications. For instance, key access routes like LA 1 urgently require capacity expansions, bypass routes around Plaquemine, and streamlined utility relocations to support heavy commercial traffic.
State leaders are actively reorganizing project delivery frameworks to expedite these critical builds. Furthermore, lawmakers are preparing for an upcoming legislative session to secure sustainable new revenue streams.
Public feedback remains vital as the planning commission finalizes Move 2050 alongside Louisiana’s statewide transportation plan. Residents can participate in upcoming public meetings held throughout October and November in-person or via Zoom.
