Baton Rouge Metro Airport Lands $1M Grant for Direct Chicago Flights

Baton Rouge Metro Airport (BTR) secured a major win for local travelers. The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded BTR a $1 million grant through the Small Community Air Service Development Program. Airport officials plan to use these funds to attract non-stop daily flights to Chicago.

Driving Growth with Minimum Revenue Guarantees

Director of Aviation Mike Edwards explained that the grant operates as a Minimum Revenue Guarantee (MRG). This fund mitigates financial risk for airlines during the initial 6 to 12 months of new route operations. By offsetting startup costs, BTR offers airlines a safety net while they market the new route and build local passenger volume.

BTR previously leveraged this exact program to secure its successful non-stop service to Washington, D.C. (DCA). Strong community usage of the D.C. route proved BTR’s capability to sustain new market additions, convincing federal regulators to back the Chicago initiative.

Connecting Baton Rouge to Global Business

Data shows Chicago ranks as BTR’s top unserved market. A direct connection to Chicago opens massive economic potential for South Louisiana. Beyond connecting regional travelers to the Upper Midwest, flying into a major international hub like Chicago O’Hare (ORD) simplifies worldwide travel. For example, local corporate links—such as the new Hyundai Steel facility in Ascension Parish—will benefit from streamlined one-stop flights to Seoul, South Korea.

Looking Ahead to 2027

While the grant covers a four-year performance window, BTR leadership actively pushes to establish non-stop Chicago service by 2027. Airport representatives continue holding promising discussions with both existing and prospective airline partners to finalize the agreement.
