The proposed Hyundai Steel facility in West Ascension Parish is moving closer to construction, and local economic leaders expect the project to create a major impact across the region. Tim Johnson of the TJC Group joined Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss the project, its environmental review and the economic opportunities it could bring to Louisiana.
Hyundai Steel Focuses on Environmental Standards
Johnson said Hyundai has actively engaged with the community ahead of its air permit hearing. The company has provided information about the project and its environmental plans while building relationships throughout the region.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) will oversee the permitting process. Johnson said the facility will use advanced emissions-control technology and aims to rank among the world’s most environmentally friendly steel mills.
The public hearing allows residents and other stakeholders to submit comments for the official record. Speakers can address LDEQ for up to three minutes, either supporting or opposing the permit.
Local Contractors Are Already Benefiting
Construction activity has already begun with site preparation. Johnson said approximately 25 to 26 contractors and subcontractors are working on the site, with more than 70% based in Louisiana.
That local focus could amplify the project’s economic impact. Johnson cited more than 1,300 potential direct jobs and more than $125 million in annual payroll as major economic drivers.
Donaldsonville is already seeing signs of increased activity, including new businesses, restaurants, commercial real estate transactions and building renovations.
A Potential Economic Transformation
Johnson compared Donaldsonville’s opportunity to West Point, Georgia, where a major Kia facility helped revitalize a struggling local economy. He said West Point’s downtown eventually filled with businesses, restaurants and new opportunities.
The Hyundai Steel project could create a similar ripple effect in West Ascension, strengthening local businesses while attracting additional investment.
Following the LDEQ hearing, Johnson expects the permitting process could take roughly 45 to 60 days. If approved, Hyundai could move toward full-scale construction of the facility.
