Pennington Biomedical’s Grow Healthy Initiative Tackles Childhood Obesity in Louisiana

Childhood obesity remains a major health concern in Louisiana, and the Greaux Healthy Initiative at Pennington Biomedical Research Center is working to give families, schools and health care providers practical tools to address it. Melissa Martin recently joined Brian Haldane on Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss the initiative and the upcoming 2026 Childhood Obesity Conference.

Turning Research Into Real-World Resources

Greaux Healthy partners with the state to translate research from Pennington Biomedical into resources communities can use. The initiative provides educational materials and programs for schools, supports health care providers using clinical practice guidelines and offers information families can access online.

Martin noted that about one in three Louisiana children is overweight or has obesity. She emphasized that obesity is a complex chronic disease that involves more than nutrition and physical activity.

Small Changes Can Build Healthier Habits

Martin encouraged families to focus on manageable changes instead of trying to overhaul their lifestyles overnight. Drinking water instead of one sugary beverage, adding a fruit or vegetable to a meal, taking a family walk and reducing screen time can help establish healthier routines.

She also stressed the importance of planning. Grocery shopping and meal preparation before a busy week can make it easier for families to follow through when schedules become hectic.

Families and Providers Share the Responsibility

Martin said research supports a family-based approach to treating childhood obesity. Parents can help create a supportive environment by modeling healthier habits and making changes together.

Health care providers also play an important role. Martin highlighted motivational interviewing, which brings children into conversations about their health and allows them to help establish goals that matter to them.

Childhood Obesity Conference Set for September 24

Pennington Biomedical will host its 2026 Childhood Obesity Conference on September 24. The event will explore pediatric obesity care, rural health innovation, prevention and healthy eating.

The conference aims to give attendees practical strategies they can take back to clinics, schools and communities. Its theme, “Be the Reason Kids Grow Healthy,” reflects the broader goal of bringing researchers, providers, families and communities together to address childhood obesity.
