Meta Settlement Targets Youth Social Media Use
Davis and Haldane opened the technology discussion with Meta’s major settlement related to youth mental health and social media use. The settlement includes funding aimed at addressing the growing concerns surrounding social media addiction among young people.
Davis explained that proposed changes could limit teenagers’ social media use to two hours per day while restricting access during school and overnight hours. He also discussed efforts to strengthen age verification.
Rather than requiring users to verify their age separately on every social media platform, Davis highlighted a potential system that would verify an age range directly through a phone or computer. That approach could give platforms the information they need without requiring users to repeatedly share personal details.
AI Watermarks Could Change Online Content
The conversation then shifted to artificial intelligence and the growing push for AI-generated content to carry identifiable watermarks.
Davis explained that AI watermarks may appear as visible labels on images, but much of the information could remain hidden in metadata. For AI-generated text, the watermark could involve patterns that people cannot easily see but that technology can detect.
The goal: make it easier for platforms and users to identify AI-created material and distinguish it from human-generated work.
Cybersecurity Moves Toward the Offensive
Davis also previewed another major technology topic: cybersecurity companies potentially taking a more proactive approach against hackers.
As cyberattacks continue to evolve, the discussion suggests that companies may increasingly look beyond defense and explore ways to respond more aggressively to cyber threats.
