Congressman Troy Carter is celebrating progress in both education and healthcare after introducing new legislation aimed at preparing students for the growing medical cannabis industry while also recognizing a groundbreaking medical achievement in Louisiana.
During an interview on DC Current, Carter discussed his newly introduced EDUCATE Act, short for the Establishing and Developing University Cannabis Agriculture Techniques and Excellence Act.
Preparing Students for a Growing Industry
The legislation encourages colleges and universities, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to develop agricultural programs focused on medical cannabis.
Carter said the legal cannabis industry continues to expand nationwide, creating demand for trained professionals in farming, processing, research, and cultivation. He believes higher education can help prepare the next generation of workers while maintaining strict academic standards and regulatory oversight.
Southern University has already established itself as a leader in cannabis research, and Carter hopes the legislation will encourage more institutions to follow its example.
Louisiana Celebrates a Medical Milestone
The conversation also focused on a major healthcare breakthrough in New Orleans.
Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Cressy recently became the first patient in Louisiana to be cured of sickle cell disease through gene therapy. Carter praised the work of physicians at LCMC Health, Manning Family Children’s Hospital, LSU, and Tulane, calling the achievement life-changing for patients living with the painful genetic disorder.
Cressy, who dreamed of becoming a pilot, pursued the treatment after sickle cell disease prevented him from qualifying for flight certification. Following the successful therapy, he is now working toward achieving that goal while also launching a nonprofit organization to help other sickle cell patients navigate treatment.
Looking Ahead to America’s 250th Birthday
Carter also reflected on the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, encouraging Americans to celebrate the country’s progress while continuing to work toward greater opportunity and justice for future generations.
