Louisiana Congressman Pushes Trade Investigations to Protect Sugar and Seafood Industries

Louisiana Congressman Troy Carter is calling for federal trade investigations to help protect the state’s sugar and seafood industries. He says unfair foreign competition hurts local producers and threatens Louisiana jobs.

Protecting Louisiana Sugar Growers

Carter supports Section 301 investigations into trade practices involving imported sugar. These investigations allow federal officials to examine whether foreign countries unfairly target American producers.

Louisiana grows about 13 million tons of sugarcane each year. Carter said local farmers follow strict safety and production standards. He argues that some foreign producers do not meet those same standards.

The congressman wants federal officials to determine whether imported sugar unfairly lowers market prices. He says Louisiana growers deserve a fair chance to compete.

New Focus on Imported Shrimp

Carter is also pushing for a Section 301 investigation into imported shrimp. He joined Congressman Clay Higgins and more than 100 members of Congress in supporting the effort.

According to Carter, some imported shrimp enter the U.S. market at prices that Louisiana shrimpers cannot match. He says some products may not meet the same health, safety, and quality standards required in the United States.

The investigation would help federal officials identify trade imbalances and determine whether foreign producers gain an unfair advantage.

Supporting Louisiana Jobs

Carter said the investigations build on previous efforts, including the Safer Shrimp Imports Act. He believes stronger enforcement can stop substandard products from repeatedly entering U.S. ports.

The goal is simple. Carter wants Louisiana farmers, fishermen, and seafood producers to compete on equal terms. He says the investigations are moving quickly, although officials have not announced a specific timeline.

If approved, the investigations could impact two industries that play a major role in Louisiana’s economy and culture.
