New Orleans is proving again why it remains one of the top destinations for major events, conventions and tourism. Leaders with New Orleans & Company say the city’s hospitality network continues to drive economic growth while welcoming visitors from around the world.
Kelly Schultz with New Orleans & Company highlighted the teamwork required to bring major events to the city. Partners across hotels, restaurants, transportation services, security providers and convention staff work together to create a smooth experience for guests.
Convention Center Expansion Continues
The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center continues major upgrades through a $700 million renovation project. Leaders say improvements will help the venue remain one of the largest and most competitive convention centers in the country.
The facility hosts a wide range of events. Those include education conferences, medical conventions, sporting tournaments and automotive exhibitions. Schultz said flexibility remains one of the building’s biggest strengths.
Economic impact reaches far beyond convention walls. Visitors often spend money at local restaurants, museums, shops and music venues after meetings end. That spending supports businesses and jobs across the region.
Sail 250 Brings International Ships to New Orleans
One of the biggest events now underway is Sail 250, part of the national America 250 celebration marking the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. Sail 250 brings tall ships and naval vessels from countries including Chile, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Free public tours run through June 1 and give families a chance to explore ships rarely seen by the public. Organizers say New Orleans is honored to become the first host city for this national celebration.
City leaders say the ability to manage large events at the same time continues to strengthen New Orleans’ reputation as a world-class destination.
