Louisiana State Representative Emily Chenevert joined “Mornings with Brian Haldane” this week to discuss the final stretch of the legislative session, a community fundraiser for the Coppola family, and major education issues moving through the Capitol.
One of the biggest topics centered around the Coppola Pickleball Cancer Benefit happening this weekend at Electric Pickle. Chenevert said the fundraiser supports the family of St. George firefighter Brian Coppola as they navigate his cancer battle. The event includes pickleball tournaments, live music, jambalaya, crawfish, and community support activities.
Chenevert said the event highlights how Baton Rouge communities continue to rally around first responders and families facing difficult situations.
The conversation also shifted toward the Louisiana legislative session. Chenevert explained lawmakers are still moving bills through committees with roughly two weeks remaining before the session deadline on June 1.
Among the legislation she discussed was a workers’ compensation bill designed to give businesses more opportunities to dispute claims in court. She also spoke about ongoing discussions surrounding pre-K licensing requirements for non-public schools.
Another major focus involved a proposal encouraging Louisiana education officials to add human development visuals into classroom science standards. Chenevert said the measure would allow students to see age-appropriate educational content showing fetal development and milestones during pregnancy.
The interview wrapped with discussion surrounding the proposed St. George school district amendment. Chenevert argued local communities should have greater control over education decisions and said residents followed the process lawmakers previously outlined for creating a school district.
