Misti Cordell Discusses Louisiana Congressional Map Fight and 5th District Priorities

Louisiana congressional candidate Misti Cordell says uncertainty surrounding the state’s congressional maps has temporarily paused campaign activity as courts and lawmakers continue debating the future of Louisiana’s districts.

Cordell, who is currently running for Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District, discussed the ongoing legal battle during a recent radio interview. She said candidates may have to requalify for the race depending on how lawmakers redraw the maps. She also said the election could return to a jungle primary format later this year.

Cordell, a northeast Louisiana native from Ouachita Parish, said the current district lines created confusion for voters and candidates alike. She noted that one version of the map briefly drew her outside the district by “about five streets.”

During the interview, Cordell highlighted health care, education, agriculture, and workforce development as top priorities in her campaign. She pointed to her background in health care administration and physician recruitment as experience that shaped her understanding of rural Louisiana’s medical challenges.

Cordell also discussed her role as chairwoman of Louisiana’s Board of Regents. She credited ongoing efforts to better connect K-12 education, trade schools, universities, and employers to strengthen Louisiana’s workforce pipeline.

She emphasized the growing demand for skilled trade workers across Louisiana. Cordell said industries continue facing shortages of electricians, plumbers, bricklayers, and other skilled labor positions.

Agriculture also remains a central issue in her campaign. Cordell said Louisiana farmers need stronger support through farm bills and reduced regulations to help family farms stay competitive.

Cordell added that she wants to focus on policies that strengthen families and expand economic opportunities throughout rural Louisiana.
