The Town of Killian is working through major water system upgrades after years of problems with discolored water and outages. Mayor Caleb Atwell said the latest outage was planned and tied to improvement work on the town’s water system.
Atwell said Magnolia Water Utilities shut down service so crews could install a new filtration system. The system will remove iron and manganese from the water supply. Those minerals caused the brown and discolored water many residents reported over the past several years.
Killian only has one water well. Because of that, workers must shut down the entire system during repairs and upgrades. Magnolia alerted customers several days before the outage through its notification system.
The town’s water issues became a major concern in 2024 after system failures drew attention across Louisiana. State officials later took control of the water system and placed it under receivership. Engineers managed the system for more than a year before officials approved the sale to Magnolia.
Atwell said Magnolia specializes in buying failed water systems and rebuilding them. The company purchased Killian’s system in December 2025. The new filtration equipment marks the first major upgrade to the town’s water system since it launched around 1990.
Atwell also said water infrastructure remains a statewide issue. He noted that many Louisiana water systems date back to before 1960. The state faces an estimated $9 billion in water infrastructure needs.
Residents should expect more outages while crews continue repairs. Atwell said the work will take time, but he believes the town is finally moving in the right direction.
