Former Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome has hired Louisiana criminal defense attorney Jim Boren as a state grand jury investigation tied to her former administration continues.
The news gained attention after reports confirmed the grand jury proceedings were postponed indefinitely. The delay fueled public discussion about the investigation and what may happen next.
During Mornings with Brian Haldane, attorney Franz Borghardt said people should not assume guilt simply because Weston Broome hired legal counsel. He explained that witnesses often hire attorneys before appearing before a grand jury.
Borghardt also raised concerns about how information from the investigation became public. Grand jury proceedings in Louisiana typically remain confidential. He suggested someone connected to the investigation may have shared details with the media.
At this stage, investigators have not charged Weston Broome with a crime. Attorneys discussing the case stressed that she currently remains a witness. Under Louisiana law, prosecutors must secure a grand jury indictment before filing formal charges in cases like this.
The broader investigation focuses on allegations tied to public corruption and financial misconduct inside East Baton Rouge Parish government operations. Earlier indictments connected to the probe included accusations of bribery, conspiracy, theft, money laundering, and public contract fraud involving other individuals.
The investigation continues to attract attention because of Weston Broome’s political history. She previously served as mayor-president and represented Baton Rouge in the Louisiana Senate.
Officials have not announced when the grand jury proceedings will resume. Investigators also have not shared whether more witnesses or indictments could follow.
