A Sudden Turn After Progress
Just one week ago, Kelly Guillory and her mom, Jennifer, shared hope on-air during the Dreams Come True Radiothon. Kelly was doing well. The conversation focused on her journey and the support she received.
Days later, everything changed.
Kelly returned to the hospital for surgery. While the procedure went well, recovery has been difficult. She experienced severe vomiting that reopened an incision. Doctors are monitoring her closely. She also lost blood during surgery and may need another transfusion.
Living With a Rare Condition
Kelly lives with a rare genetic disorder called very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency. It affects how her body processes fats and energy. She cannot fast. She must carefully manage her diet and activity.
Even a minor illness can lead to hospitalization.
So far, she has been admitted 87 times.
Her most recent episode escalated quickly. What started as routine care turned into an emergency. At one point, the pain became so severe that she asked her mom to call 911.
Strength in the Middle of It
Despite everything, Kelly keeps fighting.
Her mom describes her as strong and grounded in faith. Even in the hospital, Kelly finds moments to smile. She jokes with nurses. She stays engaged in her care. At times, she even helps with simple medical tasks.
She is also planning for the future. Kelly wants to become a nurse. She hopes to help kids facing the same challenges she lives with every day.
A Mother’s Perspective
For Jennifer, the hardest part is not having control. She wants to comfort her daughter and take away the pain. She knows she cannot.
Instead, she leans on faith.
While waiting during surgery, she wrote about surrendering fear and trusting God through the unknown. It is a daily battle between worry and hope.
Why It Matters
Stories like Kelly’s are the reason the Dreams Come True Radiothon exists. Behind every donation is a family navigating the unthinkable.
And as Jennifer shared, the journey is never truly over.
