Baton Rouge Mall Shooting Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured as Police Investigate Targeted Violence

What Happened at the Mall of Louisiana

A shooting at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday afternoon left one person dead and several others injured. According to Baton Rouge Police Department Chief T.J. Morse, the incident began around 1:22 p.m. when gunfire broke out near the food court.

Police received multiple 911 calls within minutes. An officer already assigned to the mall responded immediately, running toward the danger. A deputy nearby also moved in quickly, triggering a large-scale response from local and federal agencies.

Victims Were Innocent Bystanders

Authorities confirmed six people were injured. One victim later died at the hospital. Another remains in serious condition following surgery. Chief Morse said none of the victims were involved in the conflict.

“These were people simply enjoying their day,” he said. “They were caught in a senseless act of violence.”

Two Groups May Have Sparked the Shooting

Investigators believe the shooting was not random. Early evidence suggests two groups argued before gunfire erupted. Detectives are working to determine if the incident is gang-related or tied to another dispute.

Multiple agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting in the investigation. Officers collected shell casings and are reviewing surveillance footage, though video lacks audio.

Suspects Detained, Charges Pending

Police detained five individuals for questioning. Some turned themselves in, while others were stopped by officers. As of now, no formal arrests have been announced.

Chief Morse said potential charges could include first-degree murder and attempted murder, depending on the findings.

Investigation Continues

Detectives worked through the night gathering evidence and following leads. A press conference is expected to provide more details as the case develops.
