New Orleans Riverfront Growth, Homeless Concerns and Hondo Rodeo Draw Attention

New Orleans has a lot happening right now. A major riverfront expansion is moving forward. Homeless encampments remain a growing concern. Hondo Rodeo is also bringing major energy to the city.

Jeff Crouere talked about all three during a Tuesday morning interview. He said the expansion at Woldenberg Park is a big win for New Orleans. The project will give people more access to the Mississippi River. It will also connect more of the city’s waterfront for both locals and tourists.

Crouere said the expanded riverfront could cover nearly two and a half miles. That would make it one of the larger riverfront park spaces in the country. He said the project could help connect the French Quarter, Marigny and Bywater in a more useful way. He also said New Orleans should do a better job promoting the riverfront as a destination.

The conversation also focused on homelessness. Crouere said the issue is getting worse across the city. He pointed to funding problems and a major city budget deficit as part of the challenge. He also said many homeless camps return after they are cleared, which makes the problem harder to solve long term.

He did highlight one bright spot. Grace at the Green Light was mentioned as a nonprofit that has helped reconnect unhoused people with family and support systems. Crouere said that kind of work has shown results, but it needs more support to grow.

The interview ended on a lighter note with Hondo Rodeo. Crouere said the event is creating major excitement ahead of its Superdome debut. He said it has the potential to become another major New Orleans tradition.
