BREC is moving on several fronts across East Baton Rouge Parish. Leaders are tackling park safety, reviewing underused spaces, and highlighting major improvements at the Baton Rouge Zoo.
Security Push Gains Momentum
BREC plans to expand surveillance across multiple parks. Leaders say safety concerns continue to rise. They believe stronger security will keep parks open and usable.
Public response is mixed. Some residents support the move. Others question privacy. BREC officials say cameras already play a role in public safety through traffic systems and crime centers.
They are working closely with local mayors and law enforcement. More updates are expected within 30 days.
Park Closures Under Review
BREC is reviewing 43 to 48 parks across the parish. Some could close.
Leaders say the goal is not to remove green space. The focus is on efficiency. Parks with low usage, limited programming, or proximity to larger parks are under review.
Some locations are simply undeveloped land that still requires maintenance. Officials say that is not a strong use of tax dollars.
Community meetings are now scheduled to gather feedback before decisions are made.
City Park Survey Reopens
BREC relaunched its City Park survey after early results lacked diverse input.
Leaders want more voices, especially from South Baton Rouge. They stress that City Park serves the entire parish, not just nearby neighborhoods.
Zoo Expansion and Upgrades
The Baton Rouge Zoo is seeing major growth. Since 2021, crews have built seven new exhibits and renovated 11 others.
New features include improved animal habitats and updated viewing areas. A new animal ambassador building is also in design.
The zoo recently welcomed 56 new animals and hosted about 6,000 visitors during its latest event weekend.
Parish-Wide Projects Ahead
BREC is also planning new sports facilities and park upgrades across multiple cities.
Leaders say the long-term goal is simple. Improve safety. Focus resources. Expand access to recreation across the parish.
