City Park Lakes Master Plan Moves Forward
BREC leaders shared updates on major projects across East Baton Rouge Parish, including the ongoing master plan for City Park Lakes. Officials said community feedback is shaping the design after more than 1,000 survey responses.
The goal is to preserve the historic golf course while expanding amenities throughout the park’s full footprint. Many residents only see the Dalrymple Drive side of the park, but BREC leaders say the property stretches much farther and includes space for additional features such as trails, playgrounds, and possibly a running track.
Survey results and updated design concepts are expected to be released publicly soon.
New Plans for Airline Highway Sports Complex
BREC will also host a community meeting this week to discuss the future of the sports complex near Airline Highway at the former State Fair grounds.
Recent improvements have already increased baseball activity at the facility. Officials plan additional upgrades over the next two years to transform the area into a regional sports destination. The meeting will showcase renderings, amenities, and long-term development plans.
New Athletic Council to Coordinate Youth Sports
BREC also introduced new Athletic Director Nathan Tircuit, who is leading the creation of a parishwide Athletic Council.
The council will include representatives from each municipality and unincorporated areas. Its goal is to coordinate youth sports opportunities better and help families understand which programs exist across the parish.
Many athletic programs operate through partnerships with organizations such as the Baton Rouge Soccer Club or local tennis groups. The council aims to improve communication so parents can easily find available programs for their children.
Partnerships and Park Rentals Clarified
BREC leaders also addressed confusion about park rentals versus partnerships. Community groups hosting single events can rent park space, while organizations offering ongoing programming can form partnerships with BREC.
Officials said partnerships allow outside groups to provide services like sports leagues, arts programs, or community events while using BREC facilities across the parish.
