East Baton Rouge Parish schools are closing the year with real academic momentum. New performance scores from the Louisiana Department of Education show clear progress across the district. East Baton Rouge ranked among the top 10 districts in Louisiana for academic growth. That ranking measures year-over-year improvement, not comparisons to other districts. Duggan says growth matters because it shows whether students are moving forward based on their own progress.
District leaders drove these gains through deliberate action. School board members and the superintendent made difficult decisions, including school realignment. Those changes moved students into higher-performing schools and redirected resources to campuses that needed them most. The district reinvested savings from school closures into early education, which added more teachers and strengthened classroom support for young learners.
High-dosage tutoring also played a major role. The state recently announced a $15 million study to examine which tutoring programs deliver the strongest results. Duggan welcomes the effort. Students continue to receive tutoring while researchers analyze what works best. The approach supports learning now and improves future policy.
Despite the gains, challenges remain. Many students still do not read on grade level. High school scores will likely dip as new accountability standards take effect. Duggan says those changes will create short-term discomfort but provide a clearer picture of student readiness after graduation.
The Alliance urges leaders not to slow down. Sustained progress requires continued investment, strong instruction, and smart use of data. Growth deserves recognition, but commitment drives lasting results.
