Fred Raiford from the Department of Public Works (DPW) discusses preparations for an upcoming freeze and snow event. He explains that the DPW has pre-staged barricades at 22 bridge locations with heavy traffic to ensure safety if they need to be closed. These locations include overpasses like Segregation Blvd. and Perkins Rd. The DPW aims to keep as many bridges open as possible.
Raiford emphasizes that the response will depend on the amount of snow and its accumulation. Since East Baton Rouge (EBR) lacks snow plows, the DPW plans to salt bridges, overpasses, and critical roadways. They have makeshift snow plows to help move snow if necessary. However, Raiford admits that handling snow is not a routine task for them, unlike hurricanes, for which they are well-prepared.
He advises the public to stay off the roads during the snow event due to safety concerns. The mayor has also stressed the importance of public safety. Raiford notes that the snow may not melt quickly, potentially lasting until Thursday or Friday, creating ongoing challenges.
Raiford explains that some equipment used for hurricanes, like dump trucks with salt spreaders, will be utilized for this snow event. The DPW has ordered seven large pallets of salt rock to be used on roadways and bridges. They plan to start salting these areas today, despite the clear and sunny weather.
The main difference between rain and snow, Raiford points out, is that snow sticks around, creating prolonged issues. He urges the public to stay off the roads to avoid accidents and allow the DPW to manage the situation effectively. The DPW will continue to monitor and respond to the conditions over the coming days.
