ExxonMobil, STEM NOLA Expand Bayou Classic STEM Fest

The Bayou Classic STEM Fest is returning for a second year, and organizers say this year’s event will be bigger, more interactive, and more impactful for students across Louisiana. During an interview on Mornings with Brian Haldane, Tara Bazille of ExxonMobil and Angele McClain, Chief of Staff for STEM NOLA, discussed how the partnership is helping introduce thousands of young people to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Following a successful inaugural event in 2025, ExxonMobil quickly committed to returning as a sponsor. Bazille said the Bayou Classic has long celebrated culture, community, and educational excellence, and the STEM Fest adds a workforce development component by exposing students to real-world STEM opportunities. She noted that connecting classroom concepts to careers is a critical part of helping students envision their futures, especially through mentorship opportunities with STEM professionals and college students.

McClain highlighted the success of last year’s event, which featured more than 70 STEM stations and engaged more than 700 students from kindergarten through high school. More than 64% of participants qualified for free or reduced lunch programs, giving many students access to hands-on STEM experiences they may not otherwise have encountered. The event featured everything from drone demonstrations and planetarium experiences to engineering projects and biology exhibits, including a popular lung simulation that allowed students to compare healthy and unhealthy lungs.

This year’s STEM Fest will expand to approximately 85 stations, including new activities focused on circuitry, motorized vehicle construction, chemistry, biology, and interactive anatomy technology. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet STEM professionals, college mentors, and advanced robotics such as humanoid robots Alpha and Pepper.

Both guests emphasized that STEM education is about more than future careers. Hands-on learning helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that apply throughout life. Organizers also stressed that STEM pathways can begin early, with programs designed for children ranging from preschool age to high school seniors.

The Bayou Classic STEM Fest is free to attend and will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on the field at the Caesars Superdome, giving families a unique opportunity to experience both one of Louisiana’s biggest sporting traditions and an interactive celebration of STEM education.
