Navigating Red Ribbon Week and Halloween Safety with Expert Insights

Red Ribbon Week is in full swing, and local schools are actively engaging students with the theme, “Make a Difference, Be a Hero, Stay Drug-Free.” Manny Landry, an Icare specialist, joined the show to discuss how programs are reaching students across East Baton Rouge Parish. From lunchtime prevention learning to interactive materials like silicone bracelets and puzzles, the initiative focuses on educating kids about how substances impact their bodies.

Experts emphasize that substance abuse risks involve peer pressure, family conflict, mental health challenges, and normalized social habits in South Louisiana. Parents are encouraged to look for behavioral changes, shifting peer groups, and grade fluctuations. Protective factors include strong adult support systems, healthy coping skills, and positive extracurricular involvement. Beyond schools, Icare offers a six-week curriculum for first-time offenders caught with vapes or THC to keep students in school.

As Halloween approaches, Dr. Susan Thorton shared vital safety tips for trick-or-treating. Key precautions include staying visible with flashlights and glow sticks, wearing loose-fitting costumes, avoiding masks that obstruct vision, inspecting all candy before consumption, and establishing clear communication plans.
