Carlos Gutierrez on Leadership, Global Trade and His Book Sheer Will

Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Kellogg CEO Carlos Gutierrez joined Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss leadership, international trade and his new book, Sheer Will. During the interview, Gutierrez reflected on his rise from selling cereal out of a van to leading one of the world’s best-known food companies.

Carlos Gutierrez Reflects on Global Trade and Leadership

Gutierrez served as Secretary of Commerce under President George W. Bush, where he focused much of his attention on international trade agreements. He helped promote agreements with Central America, Colombia, South Korea, Peru and Panama.

Gutierrez described his tenure as a period of peak globalization and free trade. While he believes the United States could move toward greater international cooperation again, he cautioned that rebuilding trust and strengthening global institutions will take time.

He also discussed how changes in presidential leadership have reshaped expectations for the executive branch and its role in government.

Why People Matter in Business Success

In discussing Sheer Will, Gutierrez emphasized that successful leadership depends on relationships, courage and empathy.

He explained that professionals advance when others recognize their contributions and advocate for their growth. Leaders must demonstrate a commitment to something bigger than themselves while making difficult decisions with confidence and humanity.

Gutierrez also stressed the importance of following through. Building trust requires more than casual conversations; it means delivering on promises, helping colleagues and connecting people with opportunities.

His advice for professionals is straightforward: build meaningful relationships rather than getting caught up in office politics.

Turning ADHD Into a Leadership Strength

Gutierrez also shared his experience of receiving an ADHD diagnosis at age 65. While ADHD presented challenges with organization, procrastination and forgetfulness, he discovered strengths that helped shape his career.

He highlighted hyperfocus, empathy and interpersonal intuition as qualities that contributed to his success. By channeling his energy into demanding projects, he learned to work through obstacles and pursue results.

Lessons From Sheer Will

Gutierrez’s conversation offered a clear message: lasting success requires determination, strong relationships and the courage to lead with empathy. His book, Sheer Will, explores the experiences and personal qualities that helped him navigate an extraordinary professional journey.
