Louisiana is positioning itself at the forefront of emerging transportation technology with the launch of Liftoff Louisiana, an advanced air mobility pilot program designed to bring next-generation aircraft into the state’s transportation network.
Glenn Ledet, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), joined Brian Haldane on Mornings With Brian Haldane to discuss the program and its potential impact across Louisiana.
Liftoff Louisiana Brings New Aircraft to South Louisiana
DOTD and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) partnered on Liftoff Louisiana, which launched at the Houma-Terrebonne Airport. The pilot program will explore how unmanned aircraft, autonomous aircraft and fully electric planes can safely operate within the national airspace system.
Louisiana earned a spot as one of eight states participating in the pilot because of its strong connections to the energy industry and the Gulf Coast.
Ledet said the program will initially focus on cargo and logistics, including transporting supplies to and from offshore oil and gas operations. Future applications could include personnel transportation and search-and-rescue missions.
Electric Aircraft Could Cut Transportation Costs
The launch showcased several emerging technologies, including a fully electric aircraft from Beta Technologies. Ledet said the aircraft could operate for an estimated $15 to $20 per hour, potentially reducing the cost of transporting cargo.
Private companies, universities and government agencies will work together to develop the technology and policies needed to expand advanced air mobility.
Technology Could Expand Across Louisiana
The applications extend beyond the energy industry. Drones and unmanned aircraft could support coastal mapping, surveying, infrastructure projects and other operations that currently require more expensive or time-consuming methods.
Ledet said Louisiana could eventually expand the program to airports across the Gulf Coast, including areas near Lake Charles and Cameron Parish.
The Liftoff Louisiana program arrives during a broader push to modernize transportation in the state. Alongside the advanced air mobility initiative, Louisiana also launched an autonomous public transit pilot in Shreveport, signaling a growing focus on innovative transportation solutions.
