Amtrak Route Surpasses Expectations
New Orleans tourism continues to build momentum as visitors take advantage of expanded transportation, culinary promotions and major events.
Kelly Schultz of New Orleans & Company recently joined Mornings with Brian Haldane to discuss the city’s tourism outlook. She highlighted the success of the Amtrak Mardi Gras route connecting New Orleans with Mobile and communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The service celebrated its first anniversary after attracting 150,000 passengers—double the ridership initially expected. Schultz said packed trains and increased demand could support future expansion, potentially including service west toward Baton Rouge.
The route also supports business travel, family trips and leisure tourism while connecting New Orleans with other Gulf Coast destinations.
August Offers Food and Hotel Deals
Schultz also promoted Coolinary, New Orleans & Company’s monthlong restaurant promotion. More than 140 restaurants participate, offering two-course lunches for $28 or less and three-course dinners for $58 or less.
The promotion encourages visitors and locals to explore different neighborhoods and support restaurants during a traditionally slower tourism period. Restaurants also create specialty dishes and cocktail deals for the event, which runs through Aug. 31.
Visitors can also receive a $100 digital Visa gift card when they book two hotel nights in August and stay by the end of September.
New Convention Hotel Could Boost Economy
Looking ahead, Schultz discussed plans for the proposed Omni New Orleans convention hotel near the Morial Convention Center. The project would mark the city’s first major convention hotel in 40 years.
Supporters estimate the hotel could generate $213 million in economic impact, $15.2 million in state and city tax revenue and 1,400 jobs.
Schultz said the project could strengthen New Orleans’ ability to compete for major conventions and future Super Bowls while creating economic benefits that extend across Louisiana.
She emphasized that partnerships remain critical to the city’s success. By working together, New Orleans and communities across Louisiana can strengthen tourism, attract visitors and generate economic growth statewide.
