Why Vicknair Is Running
Lon Vicknair is entering the race for mayor of Central after Mayor Wade Evans announced he would not seek reelection. Vicknair says his four children and long-term commitment to Central motivated him to run.
A Central native, Vicknair spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Air Crewman before returning home in 2019. He later worked in petrochemical logistics and served as Chief of Staff to Mayor Sid Edwards.
Vicknair says his experience in the military and city government taught him how to navigate bureaucracy, build partnerships and turn ideas into action.
Infrastructure and Responsible Growth
Infrastructure ranks among Vicknair’s top priorities, with drainage at the forefront. He pointed to the lasting impact of the 2016 flood and emphasized the need for continued investment in drainage projects.
He also highlighted major transportation corridors, including Hooper Road, Sullivan Road and Joor Road.
Vicknair supports what he calls “responsible growth,” with detailed planning, development standards and building codes designed to ensure new construction fits Central’s needs.
Four Campaign Priorities
Vicknair identified four central themes for his campaign: Christ, community, commerce and crime.
He wants to strengthen community involvement through Central’s churches and civic organizations while supporting local businesses and attracting new commerce that fits the city.
On public safety, Vicknair said Central’s crime rate remains low but stressed the importance of maintaining strong partnerships between Central Police, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies.
Building on Central’s Strengths
Vicknair described Central’s residents and strong sense of community as the city’s greatest asset. He acknowledged that bringing residents together around different perspectives remains a challenge.
He also announced endorsements from the Louisiana Republican Party and Mayor Sid Edwards as he begins his campaign for Central mayor.
