BREC Highlights Impact of Renewed Park Tax
The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) is thanking voters after the successful renewal of a dedicated tax that helps fund parks, recreation programs, and facility maintenance across the parish.
During The BREC Room on Mornings with Brian Haldane, BREC Assistant Superintendent Janet Simmons said the community’s support reflects confidence in the organization’s financial responsibility and commitment to quality programming.
Simmons explained that the tax helps fund park maintenance, recreational programming, and operations throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. The funding also supports more than 6,200 children enrolled in BREC’s summer camps, which offer activities ranging from outdoor adventures and athletics to arts, theater, and adaptive programming.
Parks Serve Every Generation
BREC also provides year-round programs for adults and seniors. Weekly tea dances, fitness classes, yoga sessions, arts and crafts, quilting groups, and partnerships with the Council on Aging help keep older residents active and connected.
July is National Parks and Recreation Month, giving BREC another opportunity to highlight how local parks bring communities together. Simmons said parks host family reunions, community celebrations, youth activities, and everyday outdoor recreation for residents of all ages.
BREC Continues Hiring Across the Parish
BREC Director of Human Resources Corey Luttrell said the organization is actively recruiting employees for more than 30 positions.
Current openings include administrative roles, park operations, natural resource management, animal care at the Baton Rouge Zoo, golf, tennis, and equestrian services. Luttrell said BREC begins hiring for seasonal summer positions early each year while also planning ahead for fall sports and other seasonal activities.

Farr Park and Equestrian Programs Expand
BREC also continues investing in Farr Park Equestrian Center. Simmons said improvements have focused on horse care, facility upgrades, and expanding public programming.
Upcoming Clip Clop Horse Show events are scheduled for Aug. 8, Oct. 3, and Dec. 5. Riders of all ages and experience levels can participate in English, Hunter, and Western riding competitions.
The Independence Park Theatre will also host BREC’s Indie Film Festival on July 25, showcasing films, documentaries, and creative projects from local filmmakers and content creators.
