Young Ascension Professionals Program Helps Build Careers and Community Connections

Young professionals in Ascension Parish have a growing resource to help them expand their careers, develop leadership skills, and build meaningful relationships.

The Young Ascension Professionals (YAP) program, created by the Ascension Chamber in 2023, continues to grow by offering networking opportunities designed specifically for professionals between the ages of 21 and 40.

A Place to Learn and Connect

Brian Henderson, who helps lead the program, said YAP was created to fill a gap in professional networking opportunities for younger workers.

The organization hosts monthly socials that begin with dedicated networking time before transitioning into educational presentations. Topics include emotional intelligence, leadership styles, financial literacy, personal branding, social media, and effective networking.

Since launching, YAP has welcomed more than 800 participants and regularly attracts 50 to 60 attendees at monthly events. Its largest gatherings draw more than 200 people.

Networking Without the Sales Pitch

Henderson said YAP focuses on creating a relaxed environment rather than a traditional business networking event. Members come from a wide range of industries, including healthcare, education, engineering, banking, construction, manufacturing, and small business.

Instead of pushing products or services, participants spend time getting to know one another and building authentic relationships. Many professional connections naturally develop after those conversations continue outside the events.

Upcoming Events Offer Unique Experiences

YAP’s next networking event is scheduled for July 14 at Back 9 Golf in Ascension Parish. Attendees will hear a parish update from Chief Administrative Officer Ricky Compton before enjoying free golf and additional networking opportunities.

The group’s signature event, the annual Murder Mystery Social, returns Aug. 7 at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge. The interactive, 1930s-themed event encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and relationship building while giving young professionals a fun way to strengthen both personal and professional connections.
