Louisiana radio host Moon Griffon says the Republican battle between John Fleming and Julia Letlow has grown too nasty, especially when outside money enters the fight.
Griffon joined Talk 107.3’s Brian Haldane and said he does not view his public support for Fleming as a traditional endorsement. Instead, he said he simply explained who he plans to vote for and why. Griffon said he believes Fleming is the best choice, but he also made it clear that he will support Letlow in November if she wins the primary.
The conversation focused heavily on dark money and political attack ads. Griffon said dark money concerns him because voters do not know who funds the ads. He also argued that some commercials targeting Fleming have gone too far.
One example involved an ad about immigration. Griffon said the ad used part of a Fleming speech where Fleming corrected himself after saying “illegal immigrants.” Griffon said the full context showed Fleming meant legal workers with green cards who could help farmers. He said the shortened clip made Fleming look like he supported illegal immigration.
Haldane pushed back and noted that both sides have used harsh messaging. He brought up an AI-style ad that claimed Letlow was appointed to her seat in Congress. Griffon said that part was wrong, since Letlow won her seat.
The two also discussed whether Republicans can unite after such a bitter race. Griffon said the closed primary gives voters time to cool off before November. He believes the party will eventually rally around the nominee because Republicans want to send a conservative to Washington.
Griffon said the race has become emotional, but he expects time to help heal the split.
