Southern University, ExxonMobil Launch Carbon STEM Summer Camp to Inspire Future Scientists

A new Carbon STEM Summer Camp is giving Baton Rouge-area students hands-on exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers through a partnership between Southern University and ExxonMobil.

The program features collaboration between Mike Butler, Public and Governmental Affairs Manager for ExxonMobil Pipeline, and Dr. Francesca Mellieon-Williams, Associate Dean of Student Affairs for the College of Science and Engineering at Southern University. Together, they are helping students connect classroom learning with real-world applications.

According to Butler, ExxonMobil’s involvement is rooted in a long-term commitment to STEM education and workforce development. “We think exposing students to opportunities in STEM is a great way to inspire future leaders,” Butler said, noting the growing need for engineers, scientists, and mathematicians—especially in Louisiana’s strong manufacturing sector.

Dr. Mellieon-Williams emphasized the unique, hands-on nature of the program. Students don’t just learn theory—they build models, conduct experiments, and explore real industry concepts. One key focus is carbon capture and storage, a process that removes carbon dioxide emissions and safely stores them underground. Through interactive experiments using simple materials, students gain a visual understanding of how the technology works.

The camp, which serves students in grades 6 through 10, also incorporates modern STEM topics like algorithms, artificial intelligence, climate science, and heat transfer. In addition to technical knowledge, the program teaches critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

A highlight of the week includes a competitive challenge where students design and test their own carbon capture models, followed by presentations explaining their results. Industry professionals also visit to share real-world career insights.

Both Butler and Dr. Mellieon-Williams said the camp aims to build a pipeline of local talent while inspiring students to pursue STEM careers. By showcasing opportunities close to home, the program reinforces that students can build successful futures in Louisiana’s growing science and energy sectors.
