Louisiana Lawmaker Dixon McMakin Highlights Progress, Constitutional Reform and New Public Safety Efforts

As Louisiana lawmakers wrap up another legislative session, State Representative Dixon McMakin says the focus this year was simple: keep Louisiana moving forward. During an appearance on ‘Mornings with Brian Haldane’, McMakin reflected on key accomplishments, ongoing challenges and plans for future reforms.

McMakin described the session’s theme as “let’s keep it rolling.” While some of his larger goals, including eliminating the state income tax and pursuing a constitutional convention, did not advance this year, he believes Louisiana continues to make meaningful progress through tax reforms, workforce development initiatives and economic growth.

Focus on Workforce Development

One area McMakin highlighted was workforce development. He pointed to billions of dollars in economic investment flowing into Louisiana and stressed the importance of ensuring the state’s workforce can meet future demand.

He said economic development only succeeds when businesses can find qualified workers. State leaders continue working to connect more Louisianans with job opportunities as new industries and projects expand across the state.

Push for Constitutional Reform Continues

McMakin remains committed to pursuing a constitutional convention. He noted Louisiana’s constitution is more than 50 years old and has been amended hundreds of times.

He argued that voters have repeatedly expressed frustration with constant constitutional amendments and believes a comprehensive review could simplify government operations and modernize the state’s governing document. McMakin plans to reintroduce legislation related to a constitutional convention during a future session.

New Protections for Service Workers

Among the bills McMakin considers most important is the Behind the Counter Protection Act. The measure increases penalties for individuals who assault employees working behind counters in restaurants, retail stores and other customer-facing businesses.

The law expands protections similar to those already provided to healthcare workers and aims to improve safety for employees serving the public.

Looking ahead, McMakin says he plans to continue pursuing public safety measures, infrastructure improvements and constitutional reforms while seeking re-election to represent Louisiana House District 68.
