Drivers in Baton Rouge should expect overnight closures and detours as the I-10 widening project ramps up over the next several weekends.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has started work on the westbound I-10 flyover. Crews will close sections of the interstate from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights for the next five weekends.
What Drivers Need to Know
During these closures, traffic will be rerouted using I-110 and the old Mississippi River bridge. Officials say the detour is designed to keep traffic moving with minimal delays.
DOTD selected the overnight hours after studying traffic patterns. The goal is to limit disruption and have traffic flowing normally by early morning.
Drivers can also use navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps to find the fastest alternate routes in real time.
Impact on Traffic
Most local drivers will see limited impact if they plan ahead. However, truck traffic and commuters heading to plants across the river may experience slowdowns.
DOTD is using message boards and digital tools to alert drivers well before they reach Baton Rouge. Truckers also receive updates through the DriveWise system, which sends alerts directly to their devices.
Officials say this approach worked well during past projects and helped reduce congestion.
What Changes Now and Later
For now, drivers will not see major changes once lanes reopen each morning. The number of lanes stays the same, and traffic patterns remain familiar.
Over time, crews will widen the inside lane and adjust barriers. This phase is just one step in a long-term plan to improve I-10 capacity in Baton Rouge.
The full project will take years to complete, but these early closures mark the start of visible progress.
