Lawmakers debate a simpler tax system
Louisiana lawmakers are taking another look at centralized sales tax collection. Supporters say the current system is too complicated and costs the state money. Jason Decuir of Advantage Consulting said the proposal could help Louisiana collect taxes already owed without raising anyone’s taxes.
Right now, each parish can handle parts of sales tax collection in its own way. That makes it harder for businesses to comply, especially companies outside Louisiana. Supporters say a single system would make the process easier and more efficient.
Why supporters want this change now
Decuir said Louisiana loses revenue because some businesses avoid the state’s complex system. He said other states already collect dollars Louisiana is missing. He also said both the state and local governments would benefit because sales tax revenue gets split between them.
Supporters also say the issue matters more now because Louisiana continues taxing more services, not just physical products. A more modern system, they argue, would make future tax collection easier.
Another tax bill is also moving
Decuir also discussed a separate property tax proposal. That bill would let local officials lower millage rates between reappraisal years if they collect more money than needed. Supporters say that could give taxpayers a break and help build trust in local government.
Both proposals deal with tax policy, but they could affect people in a direct way. They may shape how much money Louisiana collects and how much flexibility local governments have in the future.
